And so it has begun. Sorry that I took almost a two month hiatus. Just was so disgusted on how shitty that this ice fishing season was. I went out one time after my last post and it was horrible the only thing that i was able to catch was a cold. Lewfus and myself sat in our little ice shack for 6+ hours and didn’t even get a nibble. On top of the crappy fishing there was only good ice for about 3 to 4 weeks top. The only thing good that has come out of the short ice fishing season Is that I’m out catfishing about 3 weeks earlier then I was last year.

What a beautiful Day 70 degrees for the beginning of March. You will here no complaints on that. Last year at this time there was still ice on the river. Every boat lauch in the area was packed. Everyone had the same thought as me. Time to get the boat out and fish.

We got to the boat landing at about 0730. Boat in the water and to our first hole by about 0800. The morning started off very fast. Baited up my first Pole threw it in and was baiting up my second and had a fish tugging on the first before the second was ready to go in the water. Realed him in wasnt the biggest fish I have ever caught”Photo top left” but he was the fish one of 2012 so I was pretty happy. This first spot was a gold mine we caught about 15 fish in about an hour we kept about 8 of them as most were pretty small.

When we went to the next spot the wind started to pick up a little bit and the fishing slowed down for the rest of the day we hit about 15 different holes and by about 1500 were both had our limit. once that wind hit it was like a light switch had been turned off because the fish just didn’t want to bite.

At about 1100 we got to one of our better producing holes in the past. Every time we go to this hole we always catch big fish and today was no different. I caught the 5 pounder in the photo above. which turned out to be the biggest fish of the day. This guy hit like a freight train. He hit the bait and took off and almost took my brand new Quantium Triax fishing pole with him. If it wouldn’t have been for the reel catching on the edge of the boat it would have been gone. Usually they don’t hit like that until mid summer when the water is warmer and the fish are more active. Guess he didn’t get that memo. The feeling of a nice fish tugging on the end of your pole has to feel as good as when a alcoholic gets his first drink of the day.

All in all it was a good day on the river. the fish were a little on the small side but we ended up catching about 45 Cats in total. Not to bad for early March catfishing in Wisconsin. Will take it over ice fishing any day of the year.

Until the next fishin hole
